How Big Goals Guide Us

The unknown attracts us humans. Its mysteriousness intrigues us, it wants us to know more about it. This is also what can make and break us.

This is what a big goal stands for: something mysteriousness that isn’t in direct reach. We, humans, tend to want risky gambles, as it was explored in Prospect Theory. There is a certain risk associated with exploring the unknown, something that furthers our interest.

And they give us the following:

  • They offer a north star, a direction that we want to strive for. Without it, we are disoriented with no clear path.
  • They offer us the motivation to get started.

Spectacular growth starts with spectacular goals

It is important to know that it isn’t really about achieving the goals, but more that we make an effort to achieve them. The higher the goal, the better. It causes us to grow faster and better to get closer to that goal.

But don’t forget to set achievable sub-goals as well: those will give you the confidence in yourself to know, that you can achieve anything you strive for.
